Akariya Kanarusha, a sizable antique shop near ASIJ in Fuchu, is having their big annual sale this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2. They are open 10:00 am to 7:00 pm.Â
They carry mostly Japanese antiques (a HUGE selection of tansu, as well as other items), and are advertising 35% discount during this sale.Â
They asked me to spread the word to ASIJ faculty; be sure to mention that you are ASIJ–not that they are promising further discounts, but they seem to have a soft spot for ASIJ folks!Â
A sale poster and bilingual take-away maps are posted in the faculty lunchrooms of each division.Â
The store is located just of the 20 (Koshu-kaido) on the way towards downtown Fuchu. The store faces the tree-lined road connecting the 20 with the main entrance to Tama cemetery.
Thank you to Machi Nakamura for the info.
“Ki o tsukete” —— “Be careful”, “Watch out”, or “Happy trails” when someone is leaving for travel.

Restaurant Serena in Tama will have a special menu on Dec. 1 from 6 – 9pm for their second anniversary. It costs 5,000 yen and you need a reservation due to limited seating. They have a new chef who worked at a French restaurant in Ginza. The quality of the food, the presentation, the price are all commendable. It is roomy, comfortable and relaxing. Also, they DO have an English menu. Outside the restaurant is a staircase and near the staircase is a bulletin board. They will also be putting a copy of the menu there. It is located around the corner from the veggie shop right before crossing the rail tracks to Tama station.
The special menu in English is available at Yoshie’s desk, in front of the Admissions office in the HS bldg.
Thank you to Karen Rossetto for the info.
